The king’s palace that got burnt added beauty to it , 2022
The king’s palace that got burnt added beauty to it is a short experimental trailer using still images to create a non-linear work which breaks apart and forms itself over and again. One of its starting points is the poem, The Bad Glazier (1915) by Charles Baudelaire. The film, hinged on the idea of an encounter with a glassmaker, fragments and flows like the glass he carries. The glass and the moving image are seen in relation: broken pieces (stills) that in multiple flows build up a fragmented sense of movement and beingness. This was a collaborative film made with Georgina Hill.
ubini, 2019
ubini is an attempt to re-imagine the Benin Empire as a mythical and magical kingdom.
This project sets to make a connection between Nigeria’s relationship with foreign agents through periods of colonisation and the present under the guise of capitalism and free trade.
To illustrate this complicated relationship between the proletariat, bourgeois and foreign agents in the context of production and trade, I created this simulation using a game engine, Unity. The simulation acts as a window into this mythical kingdom, highlighting the role each agent/citizen within a society (from the king, chiefs of trade, workers and foreign agents) engage with and may benefit from trade, and the result this may have in this mythical kingdom.
This project is inspired by My Life In The Bush of Ghosts by Amos Tutuola, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney, The Liberation Of Nigeria by Yusufu Bala Usman, Emissary's Guide to Worlding by Ian Cheng and Age Of Empires 2.
